Birmingham remains one of the UK's densest manufacturing clusters. Pressings and stampings, tooling, castings, fabrication and the automotive supply chain all sit within a short drive of the city centre, and the exposures they generate are metal-based: welding and hot-cutting fume, mild and stainless steel particulate, and manganese and hexavalent chromium in specific processes.
The city's long-established surface finishing and jewellery trades add a second exposure family — electroplating tank mists, acid and alkali aerosols, nickel and chromic acid, degreasing solvents and polishing dusts. Many of these operations run in older multi-occupancy industrial units where local exhaust ventilation has been extended piecemeal over decades.
We monitor across the Black Country and Solihull manufacturing belt as well as Birmingham itself, pairing personal sampling with LEV performance assessment so results explain why exposure is where it is.
